Welcome Session

Please allow Curt A. Rauhut, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, to welcome all summit attendees to Georgia Military College.  He will provide a briefing on GMC so that all attendees can become familiar with GMC, its mission and its values.  Next, Dr. Mike Holmes, Chief Academic Officer, will spend a few minutes discussing our accreditation process. Finally, Jody Yearwood, Vice President of Information Technology & Enrollment Management, and Executive Director of the Online Learning Campus, Brooke Bruton, Dean of Students & Assistant Director of the Online Learning Campus, and Jeff Wells, Academic Dean of the Online Learning Campus, will discuss the creative ways that GMC’s Online Campus has partnered with Georgia High Schools to fully integrate college courses into their academic offerings.  We will discuss the process of how to begin a MOWR partnership with GMC Online Campus and the ways in which that partnership can be leveraged to the benefit of your students

Navigating Moodle

The session will include how to navigate the links and to help students take advantage of the resources available that contribute to their academic success in Moodle. Topics will include Tutor.com, academic alert, student help desk, student resource pages, and other items online that can help students overcome academic struggles.

What Does GMC’s Honor Code Mean to Your Students?

The session will include discussion of GMC’s Honor Code, as well as the role of the GMC Honor Council in enforcing that Honor Code. In addition, participants will have an opportunity to see the online library resources that are provided to students to help them overcome challenges in writing papers, paraphrasing, providing proper citations and documentation, and conducting acceptable research at the college level.

The session will include how GMC online courses use third party sites to augment certain courses. Topics will include third party sites in our math, and foreign language programs.

Student Support Services

The session will include GMC’s academic support services. Included are academic advising, success coaching, GMC’s new Starfish program and how it will impact Move on When Ready students, tutoring, and other important topics that are relevant to the support of the MOWR program.

Effective Student Communication with Personnel

The session will include the most effective ways for students to communicate with their professors and other GMC personnel to resolve issues, navigate course requirements, and gain a full understanding of how to be successful in the online environment.

Effective Communication with GMC Personnel

Withdrawals versus Drops

The session will include proper procedures for dropping a course during each term’s drop/add period, as well as how students can withdraw from courses after drop/add. Other topics will include the attendance policy in online courses, grades assigned when students are withdrawn, and how to help students avoid being withdrawn for non-attendance.

FTE & STEM in MOWR

The session will include how to properly calculate full-time equivalent resources for your dual enrollment population. Also, it will discuss how to incorporate dual enrollment into your pre-existing STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) program.

Effective Guidance Counselor Communication with Personnel

The session will include the most effective ways for guidance counselors to communicate with GMC personnel to resolve student issues, assist with course navigation requirements, and to encourage student success.

SAP versus Academic Standing

The session will include the differences between satisfactory academic progress (SAP) and academic standing.  The consequences and the appeals processes of both will be discussed.

How to Be Successful in Discussion Forums

The session will include the basic requirements of the discussion forums in GMC Online courses. Topics will include the grading rubric, best practices, and common mistakes associated with the assignments.

Understanding GMC’s Academic Calendar and the MOWR Funding Process

The session will include an overview of GMC’s academic calendar as it pertains to the MOWR funding eligibility. It also will provide steps to processing MOWR applications starting with the student’s application to the counselor’s approval in STARS.  The steps that the GMC Financial Aid Office to award aid and GMC scholarships will also be discussed.
